9 killer tips for successful job search
Online job search has become a norm of this decade. Job search has grown beyond desktop and you can pick and choose your next job in click of a mobile button. Here are our tips for someone looking to apply for jobs online
1) Create a perfect resume. Peer review from friends is recommended before final submission. Be sure that your resume has been completely spell checked, perfectly aligned and clearly presented
2) Maintain a checklist of job portals. Online job databases can come in many forms :
2.1) Online job portals you find while performing a google search
2.2) List of email-ID's of different consultants that you maintain while getting responses
At this point I'd like to bring an interesting story. I used to maintain list of email ID's from many different consultants ever since I started applying for jobs before years. In my recent job search I had a gallery of about 3300 email-ID's and I applied to all these email-ID's with my profile (with latest updations). The response had been drastic. This helped me find a new job recently. So, never delete an email from a job consultant before you make a copy of his email-id. It really helps
2.3) Apply in the website of employers directly. This has about 40% greater success rate than applying through job portal
3) Clearly specify your job title. Say if you are looking out for a business analyst position always specify Business Analyst (or) Business System Analyst. Instead if you specify as QA Analyst/Business Analyst/System Engineer your CV will be hit for keywords like QA Engineer, QA Manager. So, be clear and specific
4) Always apply on the first day on the week around 9:00A.M. This is the most important tip. Employers will have their mail boxes flooded with resumes on Saturday and Sunday. They might miss out yours if you'd have applied on Sunday night . So, to find a job it is most important to first be chosen for interview. Latest your application is, more probable is that you'll be called for an interview
5) Look out for companies in your area using professional networking sites such as www.linkedin.com . If you do a company search with your zip code lookup, country lookup (they have plenty of search options - basic and advanced), you might find list of companies in your area. Apply in their websites directly as specified in point 2.3
6) Always keep your resume posted in website of different companies. Even if you don't find a job that suits your profile now, companies always do a lookup in their database. It is their first source of reference. This again has great success probability
7) Maintain a seperate email account for your job search purpose. If you have email ID created of the form yourname.jobtitle@gmail.com, yourname.jobtitle@yahoo.com etc it is very helpful for employers to identify you
8) Email ID Format - Email ID's created in above format has an indirect success factor in it. When employers search for profiles in job databases (third party job portal or their own company portal) if the jobtitle is a part of your email id, it hits first and best chance of getting an interview from the company
9) It is very crucial to keep organized. Maintain separate folders for jobs applied in different states. Say you've applied for jobs across USA, maintain separate folders for jobs applied and responses received from NJ, NY. This can also be based on the job portal. Say if you choose job portals A,B,C then maintain separate A,B,C folders to store information on your user-id, password, jobs applied confirmation emails, responses received from respective portals A,B,C. It helps you pick the information very easily
10) Most important - Have word processing software typically microsoft office suite installed in your PC. This is crucial while applying for jobs
