Pediatrician the children specialist is a professional doctor who has been trained and certified to help you with your baby's health ever since they are born. The real duty of a pediatrician starts inside labor room. They weigh the baby, record the baby metrics in red book, take the baby to NICU if needed. Their job doesn't stop there. You are advised to vaccinate your baby immediately or on a post dated basis. Lets discuss more on visiting pediatrician and how to effectively make use of those visits. In this post lets cover details on how to wisely choose your first pediatrician
1) Ask your Gynecologist - This would be the best place to start with. Many parents to be will be advised to start looking for their pediatrician as soon as pregnancy is confirmed. This doesn't end there. Make a note of the pediatricians you have zeroed down, talk to your gynecologist. You get best references from BO/GYN that helps you locate your pediatrician with full confidence
2) Talk to your peers - This can be relatives, friends, family. It would be always better and makes us fully assured as we see real-life case studies of their work. Personally I'd recommend talking to your family and friends while deciding on your pediatrician
3) Look for online review - Many pediatricians are listed in online portals and you can get to know details on their service, quality of service via real online reviews. Look for reviews in their facebook page if one is available

As with everything after the birth of baby, things to carry while visiting pediatrician is something that needs to be learnt. Let us start with simple checklist here
-
- Have a separate bag for pediatric visits. This will have backup of essential items and it would be better to maintain a separate bag during first few years starting from first pediatric visit
- Carry additional diapers - To be on a safer side carry 4 to 5 additional diapers. In all the pediatric visits during first few months, you will be asked to remove the baby diaper for the pediatric nurse to weigh the baby while recording birth related measurements. As the kid is new and flimsy, this can lead to diaper change and it would be better to have sufficient diapers
-
- Carry Baby wipes. This follows the diaper. If there is a need to change diaper, wipes are needed. So carry wipes in a handy wipe box
-
- Carry diaper rash cream. Again comes as part of diaper change if need be. Note that some pediatricians typically recommend minimal usage of diaper rash cream and ask you to apply onto baby's skin only on as needed basis. During first visit that happens in about a weeks time, it would be necessary to carry one as at this point the need to use rash cream in future will have to be determined
- Carry breastmilk, formula supplement as needed. Though you would have fed the baby typical newborns are sensitive to travel and will need some food to pacify the resistance from first travel to brand new place. Always carry pumped breastmilk or formula supplement bottle with you
- Feeding bottle is needed to feed baby with pumped breastmilk o formula supplement
- Carry tissue papers/napkins - If there is a need to feed baby this comes handy when you clean the spills in mouth
- Burp cloth needs to be carried to support feeding
- Blankets - Carry at least two blankets, one to cover the baby and another as backup that comes handy if needed
- Carry book provided by pediatrician to record the growth parameters on regular basis. This includes information like weight, height, head circumference etc
- Note down all the questions in pediatrician provided book before making visit. Don't hesitate to ask even a simple question to them. As far as the newborn baby goes every question is an important question
- Carry baby additional clothing like socks, mittens, cap. In case of real cold place carry snow coat or sweater. If you are not able to cover baby in car seat, detach baby from car seat as soon as you reach hospital, make them put on winter clothing as needed
